Thank you for such a thoughtful piece explaining how death is dealt with (ideally, at least) in Japan. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to attend the funeral or burial for either of my parents, but I was able to say farewell to my maternal grandmother some 12 years ago. I have also attended Japanese funerals as a family member, and it was just as you described. I wish I had known back in 1997 what one does with those long chopsticks, though! Thanks again, Diane.

In reply to Mary M. To my surprise, the crematorium throws them away. I know that in years gone by, the bones and ash were swept into the yard of the crematorium, later to be gathered and carried to a mountain top where they were left. I don't know how they are disposed of now, but they are disposed of by the crematorium.
